Seniors and Law Enforcement Together
Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares has made it a top priority to vigorously address crimes committed against senior citizens.
The Office of the Albany County District Attorney, local social service and government agencies, and members of the senior community have teamed up in order to reduce, prevent and address crimes against older adults, through the Seniors And Law Enforcement Together (S.A.L.T.) Initiative.
S.A.L.T. consists of several components, including; 1) community forums designed to provide education on the criminal justice system, the types of abuses commonly committed against seniors, methods of identifying abusive behaviors and patterns, and ways to safeguard against them; 2) empowerment trainings for senior citizens; and 3) employment of several policies and procedures distinct to The Office of the Albany County District Attorney, designed to eliminate the stigmas and complications associated with the criminal justice process.
The most common incidents of elder abuse are:
- Physical, Emotional or Sexual Abuse;
- Financial Exploitation; and
- Active or Passive Neglect.
*An abuser may be an adult, child, relative, caregiver, stranger or acquaintance.*
