New York State Office for the Aging Bureau of Community Improvement Initiatives Funding for Community Empowerment Grants for Aging in Place Request for Applications
This Community Empowerment Initiative will provide funds to support the process of enabling people/communities to choose and develop their own supportive services or other improvements to enable older persons to age in the community and stay in their own neighborhoods.
The New York State Budget for 2008-09 includes funding for start-up grants for this initiative. It involves the partnering of community residents, local businesses and government working towards a common goal. It is based upon the premise that strong communities working with state or local government can harness the resources needed to bring people together and work out shared solutions. The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) recognizes the vital role that communities play in promoting the economic, social and physical well-being of their residents. It is the goal of this initiative to encourage and advance those efforts resulting in the planning or implementation of innovative strategies that will help their residents age in their communities.
Accordingly, NYSOFA is directed to make grants available on a competitive basis to not-for-profit agencies or local governments for the development of community empowerment projects. For the purposes of this funding opportunity, an older person is defined as an individual age 60 or older.
The following is a basic description of this initiative:
- $245,000 was appropriated to be made available through a request for applications (RFA) process.
- Up to 8 awards are anticipated for either the planning or implementation of innovative collaboratives, projects and activities that enhance community empowerment and provide opportunities for community participation in creating livable, age friendly communities. Awards for planning grants will not exceed $30,000; implementation grants will not exceed $75,000.
- It is a goal of NYSOFA to fund programs in different geographic areas of the state, subject to the availability of funding, and the application process will be structured with the intent to fund at least 2 initiatives that can effectively address the unique challenges facing rural communities.
- NYSOFA anticipates issuing the RFA on February 23, 2009.
- Only not-for-profit agencies and local governments may apply. Multiple community agencies are encouraged to participate in community empowerment initiatives planning and development; however, the lead agency must be a not-for-profit or governmental agency.
- Funding is available for planning and/or implementation of new initiatives and funds may not be used to supplant any existing public or private funding that a program currently receives.
- Funds will be awarded through contracts for a one-year period anticipated to begin September 1, 2009.
