Grandparent Caregivers and the Child-Only Grant
A Legal Brief by Bill Graham,
Senior Attorney, NYSOFA

The Attorney studied the kindly-looking woman with graying hair seated across the desk from him. She seemed a bit distracted and nervous.

"Please relax and take your time," he said reassuringly. "Now tell me, what can I do for you today, Mrs. ???" "Just call me Grandmother, dear," the lady replied. "Everyone calls me Grandmother." "Okay then, Grandmother. What can I do for you today?"

"It's about my granddaughter, Red Riding Hood. Her name is Lil but with the red hair, everyone calls her Red.

"She used to just come and visit me during the day. But her mother has lost her job and has gone to Far, Far Away to find work. Red is staying with me and I don't know for how long. But my income isn't great. B.B. Wolf says I'll never be able to support her. "I feel so helpless and alone."

"I feel so helpless and alone." "You aren't alone," Attorney told her. "In New York, over 140,000 grandparents report they are responsible for their grandchildren living with them. And 28% of these grandparents live in households without the child's parents present.

households without the child's parents present. "Also, applying for a 'child only' grant of public assistance may provide the help you need.
