Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE)
State law provides municipalities with an option to provide the SCRIE program for its older citizens. Under SCRIE, tenants aged 62 and over who live in rent controlled or rent stabilized apartments in New York City and several municipalities in Nassau and Westchester Counties may qualify for an exemption to rent increases if their income and the proportion of their income spent on rent meet eligibility guidelines. For landlords who participate in the SCRIE program, older tenants are exempt from periodic rent increases and the difference between the new rent amount and the amount paid by the older tenant is paid to the landlord by the municipality.
