Housing Counseling
The U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) provides funds to community organizations to provide counseling to individuals and families regarding all aspects of housing, including purchasing a home, avoiding foreclosure, reverse mortgages, budgeting, housing options, and other housing-related issues. In addition, HUD provides Housing Counselors with a certificate training program, covering information and technical assistance about the many complex and changing aspects of housing issues.

As part of their routine assessment and case management services provided to elderly clients, county Offices for the Aging include counseling about housing issues, including assessment of the home environment for needed repairs and modifications, discussions about housing affordability strategies, service and care programs that can make staying in your own home a successful option, and, when relocation is the best option, counseling to help the older person and his/her family members understand the various housing alternatives available, the application process for gaining entry to an appropriate housing option, and assistance with negotiating the difficult process of making a relocation decision.
