Prescription Drug Information

New York State Prescription Saver Program

Effective April 1, 2009, the New York Prescription Saver Program provides enrolled individuals a pharmacy discount card sponsored by New York State. The program offers discounts on prescription drugs to New York residents who have limited incomes, and are disabled or between the ages of 50 and 64.

New York State residents are eligible if they are not already receiving Medicaid and are:

Savings will vary depending on the quantity, type and brand of the drug purchased. In general, individuals eligible for the program can expect savings of about 30-40% off the price of generic drugs, and at least 25% off the full retail price of brands.

Prescription Drug Price Comparison(External Link) - The NYS Department of Health has a website that will show you the value comparison for 150 commonly prescribed drugs with a small number of surveyed pharmacies in your area. To search, you can enter your zip-code or city/county. This website is great for seniors who may not reach the catastrophic level and could remain in the "donut hole". Also, its great for people, of any age, who have no drug coverage.

Medicare Stand-alone Prescription Drug Plans for 2009

New York State will have 51 Medicare Part D Drug Plan (PDP) choices for 2009; 2 of these plans have premiums of less than $25.00. The lowest priced plan is $19.60 for next year. Medicare Beneficiaries are encouraged to review their current prescription coverage to determine if any changes are necessary for 2009. The Open Enrollment Period is from November 15 to December 31, 2008. The plan changes that are made during this period become effective on January 1, 2009. Call your local Office for Aging HIICAP program for additional assistance at 1-800-701-0501.

Useful Tips on Getting Extra Help with Prescription Drugs

If you are a Medicare beneficiary with limited income and resources, you should consider getting extra help to pay for prescription drugs. If your income is below $15,315 for an individual ($20,535 for a married couple living together), and your resources are limited to $11,710 for an individual ($23,410 for a married couple living together), you may qualify for extra help with your monthly premiums and deductibles.
