Tips to Help You Save Energy
- Reduce drafts around windows and doors, and you can save up to 20% on your heating bills.
- Open your shades and drapes during the day to let sunlight in, and close them at night to keep cold air out.
- Close your fireplace flue when it's not in use.
- Lower your thermostat - for every one degree you lower your thermostat for a 24-hour period, you could save 3% on your heating bills.
- Use a programmable thermostat to lower temperatures automatically while you are at work, at night, or when you are away. You can save about $100 a year.
- Set your water heater no higher than 120 degrees.
- Have your furnace or boiler inspected and insulate your hot water pipes.
- Clean or replace your furnace filter once a month and save $10-$30 a year.
- Insulate and seal heating ducts. Poorly sealed ducts can waste 10-30% of your energy.
- Use Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs), which last 10 times longer, use 75% less electricity and run cooler than incandescent bulbs.
And, if you're having trouble paying your energy bills, this toll-free number and Web site can connect you to assistance programs.
