- New York City - In 2008, New York City became the first major U.S. city to create a pedestrian safety program for seniors. NYCDOT’s Safe Streets for Seniors program aims to lower the overrepresentation of seniors in pedestrian fatalities. NYCDOT created a design toolbox to build safer, more accessible crossings by providing longer clearance intervals to accommodate slower walkers, shortening crossing distances with pedestrian refuge islands and curb extensions, redesigning roadways to calm traffic, and upgrading markings to make pedestrian crossings more visible to drivers. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/sidewalks/safeseniors.shtml

- New York City - BLUEPRINT TO ENHANCE CITY'S LIVABILITY FOR OLDER NEW YORKERS

- Department for the Aging (NYCDFTA) received a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging to Enhance Services at Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities (NORCs). The program will address the health and mental health needs of older NORC residents by redesigning how, where, and which services are provided to NORC seniors. As a part of the grant, DFTA will provide older NORC residents with the tools necessary to manage their health better by implementing the evidence-based Chronic Disease Self Management Program. The Agency also will empower older residents to manage their mental health better by offering Behavioral Activation Therapy, which should reduce depression and improve quality of life while increasing socialization and participation in NORC activities. Finally, it will promote expanded depth and breadth of NORC residents’ participation in the governance and operation of the NORC itself.
- New York City - Market Ride
is an initiative offering seniors greater access to nutritious foods available at supermarkets. The project is intended to make it easier for seniors in neighborhoods where access to fresh, nutritious and inexpensive produce is limited, to shop at supermarkets without having to travel long distances or navigate public transportation. Senior centers in every borough will be participating in the project. http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/10/14/2009-10-14_market_day_comes_via_school_bus_for_seniors.html - Manhattan -
