- To better understand the health issues important to county residents, a Committee made up of community members and agency representatives, including the Office for the Aging, has been formed to identify and prioritize for action, the public health issues deemed most important by the community.

- Onondaga
- F.O.C.U.S. (Forging Our Community's United Strength) of Greater Syracuse has invested considerable time and effort in building livable communities
- Senior Transportation Services
- The Onondaga County Department of Aging and Youth and Centro provide ride services for senior residents of Onondaga County. Seniors must be at least 60 years old and must be pre-registered to receive the service. http://www.centro.org/Senior-Transportation-Program.aspx - The following Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities are in place:
- Syracuse NORC – Coordinator position is housed at the Northeast Senior Center
- Tompkins County
- Eco-Village Co-housing model used at Ithaca College. The benefits for seniors who live adjacent to campus include opportunities to continue education and the benefits for students who attend school include opportunities to volunteer and to assist and support the seniors
- A senior "focus group" participated in a community needs assessment project called Compass II
through the United Way of Tompkins County. The survey project included community assets for older adults, employment trends among older adults, mental health concerns among older adults, drug and alcohol use, health care, housing, recreational and cultural activities, crime, affordable long term care, age discrimination and transportation.
