General Caregiving Resources

The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) - Offers a wide array of services for our growing population of elders. NYSOFA, in cooperation with county and borough programs for aging in New York City, guides and serves elders, their families and caregivers. NYSOFA advocates for elders at every level of government and throughout local communities. Our website provides visitors with information and access to local services and programs, such as caregiver services, adult day care, respite, and others as well as to statewide and national resources, such as information on Medicare, EPIC, and other health insurance, LTC Ombudsman (advocates for someone in a nursing home), long term care reform, a Senior Citizen Resource Guide, links to county offices for the aging (OFA) and other agencies and much more. Local county offices for the aging provide services and supports that benefit older individuals and their families. Services vary from local office to local office; caregivers can arrange for a face-to-face meeting with a trained staff person.

NYSOFA's Families and Caregivers site - Provides information for and about caregivers along with links to other websites for caregviers across the lifespan and professionals as well as a link to the local offices for the aging.

AARP's Family & Caregiving site(External Link) - Contains a wealth of information for people caring for someone else. AARP has a Grandparenting-specific site, which is noted below.

Alzheimer's Association(External Link) - You can search for a chapter and services near you.

Family Caregiver Alliance (FCA)(External Link) - Is a public voice for caregivers, illuminating the daily challenges, offering assistance, and championing their causes through education, services, research and advocacy. This site contains consumer-focused fact sheets and other helpful information. FCA's Caregiving Policy Digest is a focused newsletter that offers a fresh look at the rapidly changing caregiving environment. It includes briefings on key national and state legislation, news on innovative public programs, and the latest information on caregiving and long-term care policy at national and state levels. National Family Caregiver Association(External Link) - Educates, supports, empowers and speaks up for caregivers who care for loved ones. Through their core messages, they can help you to 'Believe in Yourself, Protect Your Health, Reach Out for Help and Speak Up for your Rights'. This site has a wealth of information including tools such as 'Family Caregiving 101,' and 'Care for the Family Caregiver,' which are noted below as well as other helpful tools and tips for caregivers.

Friends and Relatives of Institutionalized Aged (FRIA)(External Link) - FRIA's mission is to improve the quality of long-term care in New York with a special focus on nursing home residents. They help friends and relatives become more informed and effective caregivers for the needs of their loved ones. Their website has a wealth of information. Their Helpline -- 212-732-4455 - is toll free for New York City residents.

The Eldercare Locator(External Link) - Is a public service of the U.S. Administration on Aging, can be the first step to finding resources for older adults in your community. Just one phone call or Website visit provides an instant connection to resources that can assist older persons to live independently in their communities. The service links those who need assistance with state and local area agencies on aging (offices for the aging) and community-based organizations that serve elders and their caregivers. You can follow the easy directions on-line to find services or speak to an Eldercare Locator information specialist at: 1-800-677-1116 weekdays, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (ET). Spanish-speaking Information Specialists are on duty.

The National Respite Locator Service(External Link) - Helps parents, caregivers, and professionals find respite services in their state and local area to match their specific needs. Use the "Search for Respite" feature to find the respite services and programs in your area. Then you can contact the agency for specific information about their services.
