Unpaid Caregivers: The Network
The New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) and its network of 59 county offices for the
aging provide an array of services to informal (unpaid) caregivers through the New York Elder
Caregiver Support Program.
The program service components are:
- Information to caregivers about available services;
- Assistance for caregivers in gaining access to these services;
- Individual Counseling, Support Groups, and Caregiver training to assist caregivers in the
areas of health, nutrition and financial literacy and to make decisions and solve problems
relating to their caregiving roles;
Based on availability of resources and a determination of need:
- Respite services are provided to temporarily relieve caregivers by providing a short-term
break, through home care, overnight care in an adult home, assisted living facility or nursing
home, adult day care and other services; and
- Supplemental Services are also available to complement and supplement care provided by
caregivers, such as a personal emergency response system, assistive technology, home
modifications, home delivered meals, transportation.
